ComparE pRicing

Hospitals may be moderately compliant with the CMS mandate for a list of shoppable services and prices, but one thing we can see is how within a city (or a 50 mile radius if more rural), prices for services are rather comparable for the same service.

The video below looks at the pricing in New York City for an upper endoscopy, a fairly common procedure for anyone with a gastrointestinal bleed or stomach pain not easily treated with medication.

Across the board, we can see that the Medicare price for an EGD (upper endoscopy) is $981 between NYP, NYU, and Mount Sinai. Unfortunately, our Aetna pricing may refer to two different plans, hence the $1000 variation between hospitals, and these three hospitals were not consistent in sharing a cash price.
